The New Teacher Project/Chicago Teaching Fellows

Investment:$100,000
Years:2006–2007

The Fund, in partnership with the Joyce Foundation, made a seed investment in The New Teacher Project (TNTP) to work with Chicago Public Schools in launching the Chicago Teaching Fellows program. TNTP is a national non–profit organization dedicated to increasing the number of outstanding individuals from alternative routes who become public school teachers. To date, TNTP has recruited, prepared or certified approximately 23,000 high–quality teachers, worked with more than 200 school districts nation–wide and established more than 40 programs in 22 states.
Results

The New Teacher Project has trained or hired 43,000 teachers.

Through a highly rigorous selection process, TNTP recruited more than 547 Chicago Teaching Fellows since 2006. Approximately 80 percent of all Fellows are teaching in schools with 85 percent or more low–income students. Also, over 80 percent of Fellows teach in high–needs subject areas, including math, science, special education and world languages (especially Spanish and Chinese). Nationally, The New Teacher Project has trained or hired 43,000 teachers.

Teachers hired through alternate routes stay teaching in Chicago

Seventy percent of teachers hired through alternate routes stay in Chicago for at least 5 years, significantly greater than the national average
Through a series of Fund investments, the district has moved from having one program to a number of high-quality programs that prepare mid-career professionals with deep content knowledge in high-need subject areas to teach in our classrooms.
